Outcome: Initial Outcome
There are many agricultural commodities in Henderson County. In 2017, Henderson County was in the top grain producing counties in the state, and has been for many years. Grain crop production is facing a downward pressure with severe economic distress (high inputs, low commodity prices, high land rent, flooded machinery market) for at least the next 3-4 years.
With the downward pressure on the agriculture economy, planning details out for the next growing season is essential. The Henderson County Grain Day was planned for just that, planning for the next growing season and helping farmers make decisions. 49 people were in attendance for this meeting - with 70% being farmers and 20% being agribusinesses.
The Henderson County Agriculture Extension Agent worked hard to get the meeting tailored to meet the specific needs of the county. Topics included 2018 market outlook and grain profitability, weed and disease management, different ways to store grain, and phantom yield loss.
Survey results show that all topics were very beneficial. 50% of survey results showed that this meeting saved $15-30+/per acre for the next growing season. Several responses said this was the best meeting Extension has put on yet, and all survey responses stated they would like this meeting to be done again next year.
