Planning Unit: Muhlenberg County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

COVID-19 has changed the way we live, work, and reach limited resource families in Muhlenberg County, KY.  In person, group classes, social gatherings, and life as we knew it came to a screeching halt at the onset of COVID-19.  It effected the way the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and the Nutrition Education Program assistant senior reached the under-served families in Muhlenberg County.  The Hope 2 All Food Pantry in Muhlenberg County, KY saw an 50% increase in families needing food assistance during the pandemic.  Since in person classes were not permitted a partnership was formed with the Hope 2 All Food Pantry to reach out to families in need of informational assistance but unable to attend any weekly or monthly classes.  Each week 250 informational newsletters, kitchen tips, and recipes were distributed to families receiving weekly food boxes from the Hope 2 All Food Pantry.  The drive thru food distribution site provided an ideal setting to stay connected with families previously enrolled in NEP classes, and introduce interested families to the Nutrition Education Program to upcoming classes when they resume.  An average of 850 families were reached each month through this partnership,  over the seven month period from October – April over 5000 pieces of nutritional information, recipes, and newsletters were distributed to families in need in Muhlenberg County, KY.
