According to the 2020 Early Childhood Profile, 64.1% of children in Caldwell County are ready for kindergarten. Children who start kindergarten with delayed development and fewer assets are by far more likely to repeat grades, get tracked into lower-tier classes and drop out of high school than more advantaged children. Prior to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the Caldwell County Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences hosted in-person Laugh & Learn Preschool playdates that allowed preschool age children to participate in a variety of kindergarten readiness activities through play. Laugh & Learn To Go offered an alternative to the traditional Laugh & Learn playdates. The Caldwell FCS Agent created a private Facebook group for families of preschool age children. Each month, the FCS Agent created a variety of videos demonstrating activities for families that could be recreated at home. Activities focused on fine and gross motor skills, literacy skills, math skills, letter, color, and number recognition and other kindergarten readiness skills. In addition to the Facebook group, the FCS Agent put together Grab Bags filled with supplies for the demonstrated activities. Forty-seven families joined the Facebook group. On average, twenty-five individuals view the demonstration videos. Ninety-one Grab Bags have been distributed.
