Adaptable GAP Training

Planning Unit: Caldwell County CES

Major Program: Tobacco

Plan of Work: Production Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Caldwell and Trigg counties produce a significant amount of tobacco. Both counties combine for 2,213 acres of all tobacco types of tobacco including the more recent Pennsylvania boadleaf wrapper.  Although total production decreased since last year, tobacco still maintains it's spot as one of the top agricultural commodities in the area. Since 2014 all major tobacco companies have required producers to be trained in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in order to market tobacco.

The extension agents in Caldwell and Trigg counties have scheduled, hosted, and provided training materials for these trainings each year. Although online training opportunities were available, 30% of producers are Amish and do not have access to internet. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, agents hosted two separate GAP Connections trainings in order to limit class size and maintain social distancing guidelines. Through teamwork, dedication to our extension mission, and the ability to adapt, 42 producers in Caldwell and Trigg County have received certification to produce tobacco for 2021.
