Outcome: Initial Outcome
When the new year came and Covid-19 restrictions continued to wreak havoc on traditional programs the Washington County 4-H program knew that some creative solutions would have to be implemented. The traditional classroom incubation program, for example, would be difficult to manage when entire grades could be quarantined overnight. Instead, the Washington County Extension office worked to create an incubation program that would allow for live interaction with the incubator from the comfort of home.
Dubbed “The Poultry Peek”, the Washington County 4-H met weekly for 6 weeks on camera simultaneously though Zoom, Facebook Live, and Youtube. The program took youth, their families, and their classrooms through the process of the developing embryo, introduced them to the various industries that poultry production impacts, and gave them the opportunity to interview one of Kentucky’s largest poultry producers to learn about his career.
This program was created in partnership with the Washington County Farm Bureau Federation with the objective of promoting agricultural literacy and the understanding of how the agriculture industry impacts the daily lives of youth. In it's previous format of being delivered in the classroom, only about 100 youth could participate in an incubation cycle. Through this format, More than 370 youth participated through their classroom instructions and the archived videos on Youtube and Facebook have been viewed more than 10,000 times.
