National Ag Week

Author: Jessica Barnes

Planning Unit: Harrison County CES

Major Program: Water and Soil Quality and Conservation

Plan of Work: Home and Farm Safety

Outcome: Initial Outcome

National Ag Day was celebrated on March 23, 2021 and here at the Harrison County Extension Office we decided to celebrate all week by doing some educational grab bags for our clients everyday that week. Over the course of the week we were able to hand out over 100 grab bags that contained information on things such as water safety and usage, rain barrels, rain gardens, forages, livestock handling, flower and vegetable gardening, pesticide safety and much more. All of the grab bags included publications from the University of Kentucky on that day's theme as well as some items that they could use such as rain gauges, gardening gloves, tools, chemical gloves, safety glasses, etc.

This was a great outreach program because we were able to attract new individuals to the extension office and some of them took more publications and asked questions about our services while they were picking up their grab bags. We were able also include Snap publications on how to grow vegetables as well as recipe cards on how to prepare them. We also included some vegetable seeds in some of the grab bags for individuals to grow this spring and hopefully prepare fresh vegetables for their families.

We were able to promote this event through Facebook all week long as well as advertise on our local radio station about what theme each day was. I also had the opportunity to talk on the radio on March 23rd and promoted National Ag Week and our farmers in Harrison County as well as all over the nation. This past year has been a difficult one on us all but our farmers have not missed a day of work and are doing what it takes to keep our country fed. We felt here at the Harrison County Extension Office that was worth celebrating.
