The idea for “Ag Tool Tuesday” was derived from seeing many "Tutorial Tuesday" videos and posts on social media. There are many tools that we can use in our farming operations that some producers might not be familiar, or may not know how to use. Starting in January of 2021 the Rockcastle County Agriculture Agent started making Ag Tool Tuesday videos for Facebook and YouTube. In these short, 2-4 minute, videos an agriculture tool is shown and the agent describes it’s use and how to correctly use the tool.
At the point of writing this there are eight Ag Tool Tuesday videos live on the Rockcastle Extension Ag and Natural Resource page. The videos have encompassed the following tools: soil probe, hay probe, UK Equine and Beef Management Calendars, Pasture Weed Sprayer, temporary fencing, ATV seed sower, bee keeping equipment, and vegetable seed starting kits. In some cases these videos were developed in correlation with the “Rock Ag” podcast to reference tools that were discussed during an episode.
With these eight videos, 2,702 indirect contacts combined have watched them and have 407 people that have engaged with the post in some form or another. These videos also serve as a good reference for the Agriculture Agent to send to clients when they need to know how to use something such as a soil probe.
