Outcome: Initial Outcome
One of the biggest challenges facing our state, region and county is the epidemic levels of drug abuse. This is an item identified as a priority by the State Extension Council. To address that need, the Letcher County Extension Office has begun a partnership with Addiction Recovery Center to help provide opportunities for clients in treatment to engage the community in volunteer programs. This effort has focused on litter pickup, hiking trail maintenance and gardening. The program has led to over four miles of roadside litter clean-up along the county-owned Little Shepherd Trail (a single lane driving and touring destination), and the construction and maintenance of 2 miles of hiking trail which parallels the Little Shepherd. The group is also being aided with the establishment of a gardening area at their living quarters, so that they can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of gardening. The community benefits from having some of its best tourism attractions clean, the clients benefit from a feeling of doing something helpful and getting out of their treatment center to enjoy some exercise in nature, and they are less likely to have recidivism issues if their minds have something else to focus on.
