Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Bell County 4-H and Middlesboro Elementary School (MES) recently partnered on a character education program titled, Character Counts. The program covered six weeks and incorporated character pillars such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Due to the pandemic, the lessons were recorded and shown in the classroom for students attending school in-person or uploaded to the student's online curriculum so they could watch virtually. Over 320 youth were reached with this program with students ranging from kindergarten through fourth grade. During the program, the students were challenged to become a person of character and demonstrate the traits in their daily lives. An older sibling of one of the students participating in Character Counts sent a message to the MES Family Resource Youth Service Center and stated, "I showed the videos to my brother because he never does any of these. He lies all the time and he is doing better now. So, thanks!" An informal assessment prior to the program showed that approximately 30% of the students understood what good character was. At the conclusion of the Character Counts program, more than 90% stated that they had a better understanding of what character entailed.
