Extension provides the opportunity for youth and families to develop vital life skills such as consumer awareness, financial management, culinary arts, textiles, housing, and human development. Families working together to meet these needs builds a stronger bond within every family unit.
Data gathered in the 2019 Oldham County Assessment shows the top three concerns from county residents regarding life skills are a desire for youth to have life training skills such as money management, life decision making, etc.; for youth to be better prepared for future careers.
Oldham County 4-H offered a virtual Life Skills Series featuring six sessions for 24 middle school youth focusing on Communicating, Leadership Styles, Listening Skills, Manners, Food Preparation, Basic Mending, Laundry Basics and Stress Management. Exit survey indicated 100% of survey participants developed skills to read a recipe and to use a knife safely in the kitchen. Participants understand their individual leadership style and how to effectively work with other leadership styles. Take home kits were provided for families to complete an Abstract Art Piece, Quilting Project and Omelets; the projects were completed during the sessions many times with a parent participating too. Life Skills 101 was a collaborative effort with 4-H and the EFNEP Assistant in Oldham County.
