Success StoryVirtual Livestock Education Night

Virtual Livestock Education Night

Author: Molly Jordan

Planning Unit: Bracken County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Youth Agriculture Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Each year 4-H youth across Kentucky who wish to exhibit livestock must complete 6 hours of educational credit hours in order to qualify. Normally, this is done through in-person meetings, field trips, hands-on workshops, and more. However, COVID-19 has made completing these hours extremely difficult. I saw an opportunity to engage youth in something more than just your normal Zoom meeting. I approached several individuals I know that are involved in the livestock industry to speak to livestock exhibitors about their projects. Allison Tarvin, Purina Feeds Representative, spoke about feeding and nutrition of show animals. Zach Bartenslager spoke about bio-security and keeping your animals healthy at shows and at home. Terry Burk, livestock show judge, spoke about what the judge looks for in the ring and how to be prepared for showmanship. Madison Goecke, 4-H Alumni, spoke about how to prepare for show day. Each one of these speakers answered numerous questions from the youth. When the idea for this program was initially thought of, I was only going to offer it to youth in surrounding counties; however, many youth across the state are struggling to get educational hours. On the night of the virtual event, over 230 youth and adult leaders had signed up for the event; 20+ youth livestock leaders joined to receive educational recertification hours. The participated completed a survey after the 2-hour virtual event; 97% of participants reported they learned something new about showing from the event. Over 98% of participants said they learned something from the event that they will use to help them become better livestock exhibitors.
