Our Chick Incubation Program is still going strong for our Clover buds. For the past 12 years youth in grades Head start thru 3rd grade have had the opportunity to participate and learn about the chick incubation process.   Mrs. Conn’s 3rd grade Clover bud club at Prestonsburg Elementary was our first class to do our 4-H Chick Incubation project.  25 youth took turns observing and collecting data on their eggs that first year. Since then, we have had 86 classes and 1720 youth participate in the program.  While he Floyd County 4-H Program supplied the class with an incubator, brooder box, lamp, chick feed, education poster and book to complete the project was all leader led.  Many of the students were able to take chicks home once they hatched or the chicks have been given to county residents who were interested in having chickens.   One third grade boy was so excited about his chick that he had his father contact the Extension Office to get more information on how to make his own brooder box and where to get an incubator to hatch eggs at home. We have also had a young man start to raise chickens and sale the eggs to make a little money.
