During the pandemic an opportunity to participate in a suicide prevention train the trainer training. I learned about this opportunity from one of our CEC members who has participated in this training before. Suicide rates have increased dramatically in recent years. Since I don't work with farm families much in FCS, this seemed like a good way to serve a new audience.
I partnered with the Agriculture Agent to identify groups who may be interested in attending the training. One of those groups was the Farm Bureau Women's Committee. They are a lovely group of ladies in farm families around our area. When I reached out to them about the program they were very interested so we scheduled a program.
Due to the pandemic there were many steps to take before we could invite the Farm bureau Women's Committee to the Extension Office for this training. It is important to note that the reason this program wasn't held online was because of the sensitive subject matter. Although the group was small, all six participants expressed learning new skills such as how to ask if a person is thinking of suicide. Participants gained knowledge on how to recognize the signs of depression and what mental health resources are available in our area.
