Major Program: Master Clothing Volunteer

Plan of Work: Leadership and Volunteer Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Many studies have shown that sewing is not only a productive life skill and hobby, but that it can be a stress reliever and can increase a person’s feeling of self worth. The Woodford County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and the Garrard County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent work together as the coordinators of the Fort Harrod Area Master Clothing Volunteer program. Currently there are six Master Clothing Volunteers (MCV) in the area who share their skills with others.

Each volunteer works closely with their County Extension Office to teach and lead a variety of sewing programs. With COVID, programming was virtual, MCVs supported Extension programming, including Not Your Mother's Sewing Room seminar and It's Sew Fine Sewing Expo. Three volunteers presented sessions at both of these virtual events. In addition to this, three volunteers presented at the virtual fall training for new MCVs. Woodford County and Anderson County each have one new MCV, both trained in the fall.

The six MCVs reported 255 total contacts, 142 hours in Teaching and Preparation, 916 hours in Continuing Education, and 103.75 hours in Leadership and Service. Based on the value of volunteer time ($25.43/hour), this is a contribution worth $29,543.30 to their communities and to the Cooperative Extension Service.
