Heart disease is the number one cause of death among American women.  Two people die in America every minute from heart disease.  Knott county ranks 112 in Kentucky health rankings for 2020.  Knott County Family and Consumer Science was asked by ARH Cardiovascular & Thoracic Association a department of Hazard ARH regional medical center to collaborate with a heart healthy nutrition and health program.  After discussing with the health care professionals, it was decided to offer a “Patriot Fit Blue” program for all faculty and staff at Knott County Central High.  Professionals from the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Association offered free health screenings for all faculty and staff.  These screenings included weight, blood pressure, AC1, bone density and general health questions.  The Knott County Family and Consumer
Science staff offered weekly weigh ins, blood pressure checks and nutrition and health information that included portion size, think your drink, menu planning and ways to increase movement. The program lasted four weeks. Sixty-three staff members participated in the program. Participants lost a total of 75 pounds. 27 participants decreased their blood pressure and 23 increased their movement and physical activity. Due to Covid-19 the program was completed virtually after the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. Participants were excited to meet every week with the Family and Consumer Science staff. One participant had just been informed by his doctor to lose weight and to move. He was excited when he was one of the top participants with losing weight and lowering his blood pressure. A diabetic was happy with new recipes and cooking methods. All partners hoped to do more programs together in the future.
