Continuing Educational Benefits of Environmental Camps

Plan of Work: Environmental Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Many studies have shown that there are numerous health benefits for youth  learning outside of the classroom.  Schools are often not able to  provide outdoor learning opportunities for students, therefore the  students are lacking the proper natural resources education that they  need.  Teachers for 4th grade students from six Scott County elementary schools approached the Scott County 4-H Agents and requested to attend Environmental Camp with their students, in order to provide an outdoor, hands-on educational experience. In total, 600 students, 24 teachers, and numerous parents attended Environmental Camps at North Central 4-H Camp in  Carlisle, Kentucky.  The students were provided with hands-on natural resource education while staying 2 days and 1 night at the camp.   Evaluations were given to the students before arriving at camp and before leaving camp, regarding their knowledge and interest in natural resources.  Many stated that they did not know much about natural resources, but were interested in being outdoors.  After attending the  camp, many of the same students stated that they now have better knowledge about natural resources and the importance of protecting them. They also expressed a greater desire to spend more time exploring  outdoors.  The 4th grade teachers at all elementary schools have already started making plans to schedule Environmental Camps for their students next year. The number of participating schools and students has continued to increase through the past couple of years.
