When the COVID-19 global pandemic forced Kentuckians into quarantine, schools closed to in-person instruction. By early September 2020, schools began welcoming limited numbers of youth back into classrooms, while others opted for virtual learning. A middle school teacher and 4-H volunteer reached out to the Lincoln County 4-H Program seeking educational programming for proper handwashing for her students. At the time, visitors were not permitted in schools, so the 4-H agent created a hybrid program utilizing drop-off kits and video instruction in order to meet this need and deliver a new type of 4-H enrichment program. The objective of the program was to help youth learn and practice proper handwashing techniques in order to help slow the spread of Covid-19 and to promote general health.
The 4-H Handwashing Program included an educational video utilizing CDC recommendations, Glo Germ visual demonstration tools, and reminder flyers. Youth also received a 2-ounce bottle of Lincoln County 4-H branded hand sanitizer. The intended audience of this program was originally students in 6th thru 8th grade, but due to the popularity of the activities, the agent shared the program with all five elementary schools and the middle school. All in-person youth in grades 3 – 8 participated in the program, which was approximately 1,250 students.
At the conclusion of the project, teachers were sent an evaluation to administer to their students. The feedback received indicated the following:
- 72% are more thoughtful about washing their hands after participating in the program
- 57% always wash their hands for at least 20 seconds
- 63% always use hand sanitizer after touching shared surfaces
- 89% always cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing
- 58% always wear a mask when out in public
