Marion County Fair Allows Youth Some Normalcy During the Pandemic

Author: Amanda Sublett

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Youth Development Programming

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

This year, fourteen Marion County 4-H’ers exhibited projects in the Marion County Fair 4-H Division. The fair gives 4-H’ers the opportunity to display the life skills they have learned and exhibits the hard work they have completed in 4-H all year long in the seven curriculum areas of 4-H programming.  The seven areas include:  Health, Family and Consumer Sciences, Leadership, Communication and Expressive Arts, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Science, Engineering and Technology.

Exhibits included, photography, trends, crops, horticulture, foods, sewing, arts and crafts, home environment, and more.  Fair results were shared on our Facebook page with pictures of projects and ribbons since we could not open for viewing due to Covid 19.

We were also able to host the Marion County Fair Beef and Dairy Shows in conjunction with the Marion County Fair board.

Seven youth participated in the 2020 Kentucky State Fair 4-H Country Ham Contest.  Marion County had the Non-Smoked Division 2003 Age Division Ham Winner and the Non-Smoked Division 2005 Age Division Overall Winner.   One 4-H Youth won 5th place in Heavyweight Market Division at the 2020 Kentucky State Fair.  Two 4-H’ers participated in the Dairy Show at the Kentucky State Fair, one received the Herdsman Award, and another won the Kentucky Proud Reserve Grand Champion Red and White Division.  Participating in Agriculture and Animal projects teaches kids so many life skills that they wouldn’t have otherwise learned.  4-H projects also bring families together across generations to pass down skills that will enable youth to be successful adults.
