The COVID-19 Pandemic has spurred an increased interest in home food production. As the summer growing season ended, the Jefferson Co. Extension Office continued to receive many requests about resources for extending the growing season. In order to meet the requests of clients and provide safe educational opportunities, the Low Tunnel playlist on the Jefferson Co. Extension YouTube Channel was created.
The Horticulture Agent partnered with an Extension Volunteer who had been in regular communication with the agent about building a low tunnel. Together, the Hort. Agent and Volunteer began a monthly series of videos on how to build low tunnels for personal use. Starting in August of 2020, the Agent and volunteer began meeting monthly at the volunteer’s community garden plot to film videos on all aspects of season extension utilizing a low tunnel. As of January, 2021, the playlist contains seven videos covering all aspects of season extension from building a low tunnel to protecting plants from wildlife and weather to battling extreme cold. Each video has at least 20 views with several videos having over 60 views. The goal of the videos is to inspire more growers to extend their home production utilizing inexpensive technologies.
