Planning Unit: Washington County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Increasing life skills education and leadership excellence for youth and families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With continued restrictions and uncertainty it became clear that a consistent opportunity needed to be provided to young people in Washington County to keep learning by doing. The Science, Engineering, and Technology Box club was developed through a partnership between the Washington County 4-H and the Washington County Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRSYC) coordinators. Each month for three consecutive months, 16 registered families were provided with a monthly subscription box containing three activities and the supplies they required. Spanning electricity to hydraulics to chemistry, these boxes were engineered in a way to encourage explore youth and their families to explore various careers in science, engineering, and technology.

One parent responded with how beneficial the program had been for her child who struggles with various learning disabilities and has found virtual schooling to be especially. "I wanted to say how absolutely amazing the kits were and how much he, and us, enjoyed them.  They were so well put together and so much fun.  The diverse kinds of things we did, the spectrum of science and activities, were really really great.  Also as a parent it was SUCH a blessing during this challenging time to have activities like that available to use that didn't require me getting stuff together and planning.  It truly was a great joy this past semester and I hope we can do more in the future." -Anne Barber.
