In an effort to provide a unique opportunity for our 4-H members to stay engaged and connected to 4-H while under the strict COVID guidelines of no in-person programs, a virtual program was developed called 4-H in a Box. The objectives of the 4-H in a Box program was to keep our members engaged and learning while at home through 4-H. The 4-H in a Box program included thoughtfully planned out activities and lessons that correlated with three of our Kentucky 4-H core curriculum areas including Health, Natural Resources and Science, Engineering and Technology. Each of these core areas were divided into three separate monthly action plans in which we promoted and required members to pre-register for. Once registered, the participant received a box that included everything they needed to complete the activities at home on weekly Zoom meetings with the 4-H Agent and 4-H Program Assistant.
For the month of September, the 4-H in a Box program focused on health and the weekly lessons and activities included mindfulness and breathing, preparing healthy snacks and an introduction to stretching. During October, the 4-H in a Box program focused on Natural Resources and Environmental Education. The activities included owl pellet dissection, animal track identification and tree leaf experiments. Lastly, Novembers 4-H in a Box focus was Science, Engineering and Technology and activities included pumpkin slime, basic electrical circuits and making an eco-bot.
At the conclusion of the series, the 4-H Common Measures experience survey was distributed and based on the results, participants reported that based on this program, they have learned to take care of themselves and they have a desire to continue to learn more.
