Diversification of Hart County Agriculture has been identified as a major area for program efforts. Extension has worked for many years to help producers identify and take advantage of opportunities in diversified agricultural enterprises. We have assisted growers in developing markets for vegetable crops and have done extensive work in vegetable production. The local Farmers Market has been the main focus of the diversification efforts for Janey Cline, Family and Consumer Sciences agent.
During the 2020 season in which the COVID 19 pandemic was at its peak Cline played a major role in ensuring the market remained open and operated safely. As a result of the efforts and precautions the number of vendors selling at the market, and redemption rates for WIC and senior vouchers remained steady. Vendors reported a small increase in cash sales during the 2020 season. Customers were very appreciative of the opportunity to buy local.
