Pop Up Produce

Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: SNAP

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The ability to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables is a challenge for many Kenton County families. Cost is a barrier, as well as availability. The COVID pandemic exacerbated this situation. In response to this need the Kenton County Extension Council volunteers, 4-H families and agents from all program areas collaborated with three Kenton County schools and the Freestore Foodbank to host a Pop-Up Produce event at the Kenton County Extension Office.   Financially eligible families were recruited through elementary school family resource enters and a local food pantry.   County Extension Council members along with extension and school staff sorted the produce and then bagged it.   Another bag was stuffed with Cooperative Extension marketing materials, recipes, nutrition information and fun nutrition activities for youth.

Participants opened their trunk and volunteers deposited 4 pounds of potatoes, 2 pounds of carrots, 2 pounds of onions and some other vegetable.   A melon and an assortment of fresh fruit like bananas, berries, apples, peaches, or pears was added.  The first 85 cars received a baked product like bread, rolls, or cakes. Every car was provided with a bag of nutrition information and recipes.  One hundred thirty-four families representing nearly 400 individuals received produce and nutrition information.  This outreach introduced many non-extension users to Cooperative Extension and the many programs and services offered by extension.
