Chick Incubation goes virtual

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Increasing Knowledge in Agriculture, Home and Community Environment

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Crittenden County 4-H has been incorporating a chick incubation project with the 1st grade classes each year for the past 5 years.  In 2020, classes went virtual, school buildings were closed to students, so this meant that the chick incubation program that students looked forward to was in jeopardy.  However, thanks to modern technology and social media, the chick incubation project was still able to happen for Crittenden County 1st grade youth as well as having the opportunity for the community to experience the project as well.  Through a series of Facebook live videos, packets of educational material provided to the 1st grade students, youth and adults alike were able to watch videos and learn about the incubation process. The videos included information about what an egg needs for the chick to begin forming and how the incubators worked, how quickly the baby chick is developing, candling of the eggs as well as live videos of the chicks hatching.  Viewers commented on our post about how much they enjoyed getting to experience everything about the whole process as well as positive feedback from our teachers from their students.   Teachers have been very excited to add enrichment to their curriculum by enhancing their life cycle curriculum and bring agriculture into the classroom. Children and adults are excited and eager to learn about how the chick was developing and the environment the egg must maintain to develop the baby chick which caused them to think logically and develop appropriate questions. I even had a lady stop me at the grocery store who had a child in the 1st grade and tell me how much her family enjoyed the videos and what they learned. They are now planning to start their own backyard flock.
