Plan of Work: Building Stronger Families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Simpson County 4-H provided eight weeks of 4-H At Home Kits to sixty youth from thirty-five different families throughout March, April, & May of 2020.  The kits included multiple 4-H projects in SET, cooking, art, sewing, natural Resources, and home environment.  During June & July of 2020 six weeks of summer kits were also provided to 26 youth, in partnership with Simpson Co. Schools Community Education.  These kits included container gardening, home environment, cooking, woodworking, and art. Feedback from the kits included, “We loved the kits, we would get busy and they brought our family together in a new way.” “My kids absolutely loved the kits. It was a new surprise for them every week and I loved being able to help them with the projects.”

In addition, Extension provided 200 students with lettuce container gardening kits in September 2020 through a partnership with our local middle & high school agriculture classes and Faith Baptist Academy. Demonstration videos were shared with the students on planting & harvesting, along with Plate It Up salad recipes. These students grew their own food to feed their family during a time when food insecurity remained high due to the pandemic. Feedback from the students included photos of their lettuce containers growing, with one student compiling a video showing the progression of their lettuce container from planting to harvest. One of the teachers said, "My students absolutely loved this project!"

The final series of kits for 2020 was a 12 Days of 4-H (or Homemakers) Kit where 34 youth & adults received 12 projects to complete at home in December 2020. These kits included SET, cooking, art, home environment, and natural resources work. One participant said, "Because of Covid I did not spend the holidays with family. I completed every activity in the kit. It was wonderful because it provided me something to look forward to & do each day."
