Major Program: Soil testing
Plan of Work: Grain Production & Marketing
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Union County is known for having some of the best grain crop ground in Kentucky. In order to keep production numbers up, many farmers have soil tests run on their farms throughout the year. During the harvest of 2020, Union County soybean numbers were below average with sudden death syndrome being observed in multiple fields. In order to combat this loss for the 2021 season, farmers were urged to get a soil sample taken that would look at Soybean Cyst Nematodes along with various other nematodes. The farmers who took advantage of this were not only able to read the report but also have a learning experience with what nematodes can do and how to limit them for next season. Those who had SCN samples done, showed a growth in knowledge and adapted their 2021 plantings to incorporate the findings. In the future, SCN sampling will be heavily advertised especially in years where SDS or soybean losses occur county-wide.
