Kentucky 4-H Summit

Author: Heather Coleman

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Youth Resource, Communication and Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

~~The purpose of Kentucky 4-H Summit is to retain youth involvement in 4-H activities through the middle school years, along with empowering youth to become active 4-H leaders on the local and state levels. Objectives of Kentucky 4-H Summit are to provide youth from across the Commonwealth with the opportunity to develop leadership skills through acquiring new knowledge to take back and implement within their local communities. Youth have the opportunity to belong to a group of peers and expand teamwork skills, exercise communication skills through networking with other 4-H’ers, and foster relationships with role models through the Kentucky 4-H State Teen Council. In 2017, 86 counties from across Kentucky participated in Kentucky 4-H Summit. The state-wide event attracted 488 middle school 4-H’ers, 72 teen volunteers and 20 adult volunteers. Floyd County brought 11 middle schoolers, recruited through our 4-H Teen Council; that represented three different middle schools in Floyd County.  Floyd County had one Kentucky 4-H State Teen Council Member, who helps to serve the event in a vital leadership role. State Teen Council Members developed relationships with the younger 4-H’ers by leading and building team rapport within an assigned small group. The Kentucky 4-H State Teen Council Members developed and facilitated a leadership workshop for the event, which was geared toward improving younger youth’s communication and teamwork skills within a group of peers. This was Adam Hutchinson’s third year attending.  “Teen Summit is a great program to participate in.  You get to meet other youth from across the state who are involved in 4-H.  You get the opportunity to develop your communication and leadership skills.  I was able to bring back what I learned and use it in our county programs.”
