Shelby County 4-H provided a 12 Days of Christmas themed pick up project for 4-H members to keep them engaged since face to face meetings were not possible due to the pandemic. The project kits provided twelve unique activities and written instructions including pictures to guide the 4-Her through the projects. The kits were assembled by the 4-H Agent and program assistants. 4-H Volunteers provided ideas for some of the activities included in the kits.
There were educational components incorporated into the crafts and activities provided in the kit. Information on holiday traditions other than Christmas were presented along with an activity. For example, one project was making a Jewish dreidel and playing the traditional game associated with Hanukah. Another project was a woven mat using traditional colors of Kwanzaa. One of the twelve activities was a packet of recipes to bake cookies. The lesson included food safety and nutrition information provided by the Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program (SNAP).
All of the twenty kits that were set out were picked up within a few hours. Because of the popularity, another 12 kits were assembled and made available. They were also claimed on the same day they were set out. Parents reported that the youth had a great time making the projects. Several of the youth gave their projects as Christmas gifts. It was an opportunity for families to learn and enjoy time together.
