Planning Unit: Breathitt County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Developing Human Capitol

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

For the last two years, the Breathitt County ANR program has co-hosted a Farm & Safety Field Day. The program has grown over time and more partners have been added, expanding the program to become multi-county. The Wolfe and Breathitt County ANR Agents met early in the Fall to discuss the 2020 program and how to continue in the midst of a global pandemic. It was decided to host a virtual Farm & Home Safety Week and to not only partner again with the county Farm Bureaus, but to also partner with the KY River District Health Department.

The 5 partnering organizations sought to make videos relating to farm, home, and general health safety. Video topics included: Chainsaw safety, indoor air quality, making an emergency preparedness kit, tick safety, bear safety, snake safety, sun safety/ear protection/proper lifting, tractor/road safety, and ATV safety. Videos were edited and posted to the Wolfe Co. ANR Facebook page, and then shared by others. Videos have been viewed anywhere between 245 times to 1,300 times. Each video had an associated survey that viewers could take to be entered for door prizes. All door prizes promoted safety in the home and on the farm (e.g. slow moving vehicle signs, emergency preparedness kits, fire extinguishers, etc.).

Some of the survey results:

- 100% of respondents will take proper measures to prevent ticks from getting on them.

- 96% of respondents indicate they will take steps to eliminate snake hiding places on their property

- 83% indicate they plan to take steps to prevent bears from coming on their property

- 90% will make their own emergency preparedness kit

- 83% of respondents that don't have a carbon monoxide alarm in their home plan to install one

-  In regards to radon testing in the home, 57% said they will test and 43% said they may test

- 100% of respondents that use a chainsaw and don't use PPE indicate that after watching the safety video, they will now use PPE
