Forestry Club Focuses on Community's Natural Resources

Planning Unit: Green County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Developing Youth Into Productive and Contributing Citizens

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Green County has an abundance of natural resources.  The Green River garners her name from the county and is home to six endangered or threatened species.  One particular resource our youth are most proud is we are home to Wyatt Jeffries Woods which is believed to be the last old-growth forest located in this part of the state.  Our natural resource club decided to focus on the coming year and reorganize as the Green County 4-H Forestry Club to celebrate our community's heritage land site.

At the conclusion of the 2020 program year on June 30th, over 300 youth participated in a natural resource program.  Youth have participated in Forestry Field Days where they learn to identify trees and measure logs, studied and enhanced wildlife habitat, and developed models of self-sustaining ecosystems.  Gaining this base knowledge has allowed Green County 4-H members to begin to see connections to future careers.  At the December virtual club meeting, the group learned about evergreen trees and created a holiday candle holder.  In preparing for the next club meeting, one family told the Extension Office that their child had been asking about starting a small business selling them pine wreaths next year.  Youth are looking at future careers because of their experiences in the Cooperative Extension Service and 4-H.  Preparing for their future, today.  They will be positive, contributing members to our community and celebrating the next generation of Arborist.
