Natural Resource Tree ID Project

Author: Dianna Reed

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Youth Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In March of 2020, the Johnson Cooperative Extension Service along with government officials, local leaders, school personnel and community members were challenged to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and offer ways to be of service to our communities and clientele. UK administration worked with state officials to develop guidelines, inform personnel of UK, gubernatorial and CDC directives and encouraged counties to provide outreach and information to our clientele in a safe manner. To address this challenge, 4-H program councils, 4-H Agents, State 4-H Specialists and local Support Staff worked together to come up with viable ways for clientele to receive Extension 4-H programming. As a result the 4-H Agent, with help from the State 4-H Natural Resource Specialist, created a pre-recorded Natural Resource enrichment lesson that guides youth through the process of tree identification and making a leaf collection of 10 trees found in Kentucky. In response to teachers' requests and registration, we also provided written instructions, individual supply bags, and evaluation materials for youth to "Make a Model Tree Trunk" for (40) 4th graders at Porter Elementary and (30) 5th and 6th graders at Paintsville Elementary. These resources will be utilized virtually on a flexible timetable to accommodate COVID-19 guidelines and recommendations. Follow-up will be conducted later in 2021 to determine the program impact.
