Plan of Work: Focus on Forestry, Wildlife, and Natural Resource Management

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Due to the current pandemic, more individuals are participating in outdoor recreation. Fishing is one of the more popular activities with increased license sales in most states and tackle sales setting record numbers. Kentucky is no different, as tackle stores are having difficulty keeping shelves adequately stocked. This comes to reason, as Kentucky has a plethora of opportunities for outdoorsmen. Youth in Bell County also have countless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, fishing being near the top of the list. The Bell County 4-H program recently handed out 36 grab and go bags which included a fishing booklet, fishing/water safety pamphlet a pocket tackle box that contained lures, floaters, sinkers and hooks. Bell County 4-H is attempting to get more youth involved in fishing through programs such as the one stated. In a 2018 report conducted by Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and Outdoor Foundation, they found that 24.2% (7.3M) children, aged 6-12, participated in fishing. They also discovered that 20.1% (4.3M) of teens, ages 13-17, participated in the sport. The report concluded that 82% of adults that participate in fishing were introduced to the sport prior to the age of 12. One Bell County participant in the grab and go bag stated, “This is awesome! I have a tackle box that I can take anywhere!” The goal of this program was to introduce angling to youth and assist them in developing a love for the outdoors. After time spent on or near water, the youth should be able to summarize their day and predict what they should do on their next outing.
