Holidays at Home

Author: Alyssa Cox

Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Active Living & Health Promotions

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the National Institutes of Health, the COVID-19 pandemic is having a disproportionate effect on elderly individuals who are more vulnerable to the virus and are being advised to self-isolate. This social disconnection puts older adults at a greater risk of developing depression and anxiety. In Wolfe County, nearly 20% of the population is 65 years of age or older, which is 4% above the state average.

Wolfe County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, Alyssa Cox, in partnership with the Wolfe County Senior Citizens Center, provided Holidays at Home activity bags to all senior citizens who participate in the drive-through lunch service at the Wolfe County Senior Citizens Center. Holidays at Home activity bags had varying themes, including mental self-care, using less and spending wisely, preparing a perfect turkey, creating a holiday budget, holiday traditions, and analyzing family health history.

Overall, the Holidays at Home activity bags reached over 35 families each week for six weeks. Participants were given up-to-date resources surrounding COVID-19, as well as family oriented activities related to the theme of each week.

As a result of this program, Wolfe County seniors were given the opportunity to fulfill their nutritional, social, and emotional needs in a controlled environment where COVID-19 guidelines were followed.
