4-H/FFA Livestock

Author: Owen Prim

Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development - Agriculture Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

COVID-19 has affected virtually all aspects of everyday life.  Although the full effect of this global pandemic have yet to be realized, one thing we know for sure is that children and adolescents will be affected in ways that will mark the course of their life-long development (Bartlett & Virette, 2020).

4-H has a long tradition of providing programs and activities that promote the positive development of youth.  However, this global pandemic has presented new challenges in the delivery methods of these programs and activities.  To meet these challenges, the Campbell County 4-H Agent and the Campbell County 4-H Livestock Club Leaders developed new ways for club members to complete education requirements, get project animals validated and to participate in the livestock project activities on the county and state levels.  Results of our efforts include:

  1. One new activity was a Virtual 4-H/FFA Livestock Show.  Youth participated by submitting videos of them showing their animals.  Eighteen youth participated.  A veteran livestock judge was secured to judge the entries for the show on YouTube.  Livestock volunteers secured $350 in prize money and awards from local businesses and individuals.
  2. Seven youth participated in the “Revised” 2020 Kentucky State Fair.  One youth received two championships with her market animals and competed in    The Final Drive.
  3. Twelve youth competed with their 4-H Country Hams & Essays and two won state recognition on their essays.
  4. With our county fair being cancelled, one of our families volunteered their farm to host our 4-H/FFA Livestock Show on September 5, 2020.  Seventeen youth participated.
  5. Our first On-line Livestock Sale was held on September 12th and was a great success.  The total show & sale generated over $31,000.00.  A huge thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who supported our youth during these difficult times!
  6. Our youth, parents and volunteers reported that these activities helped in the development of life long skills and helped to take their minds off of the global pandemic for a short while.
