The Harlan County 4-H Council and the 4-H Program identified a need for more students and adults to become interested and involved in a structured fitness program due to an overwhelming number of overweight students identified from the school's Fitness Fairs. These Fitness Fairs are conducted in all schools in Harlan County and Harlan Independent by Appalachian Regional Hospital, the 4-H program, and the Family Resource Centers. The Fitness Fairs also identified and alarming number of elementary students diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. These students were also frequently absent from school due to illnesses. With schools becoming virtual with COVID, 4-H implemented "4-H Fitness for Families". Jump ropes. water bottles, "tips for Fitness", "Good Healthy Habits", and Pedometers were distributed to 65 families in Harlan County as "4-H Family Fitness Grab and Go Bags". The activity was advertised on social media, and free t-shirts were and added incentive for those completing a two mile daily walk over an eight week time period.
