Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Strengthening Extension and Community Leaders and Future Leaders

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In March 2020, Floyd County Extension Homemaker program almost came to a complete halt due to the 2020 pandemic of COVID-19. For the first time, there was not an annual meeting at the County, Area, or State level. Club meetings were no longer able to be face to face until the Summer months and many Homemakers were still weary of meeting in person. This forced the Floyd County Extension Homemakers to step out of their comfort zone and explore new ways to program.

The Floyd County Homemaker Extension Council started back quarterly meetings in the summer of 2020 in a socially distanced environment and/or through zoom. Members were given the option to attend the meeting in person or through Zoom. During these meetings, the Homemakers established a plan to keep the program alive and going through the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

The Homemakers planned and completed virtual programs such as “craft days.” This was a program that was pre-recorded by Homemaker Leaders and posted on the Floyd County Family & Consumer Sciences and the Floyd County Extension Homemakers Facebook pages. Craft kits for members were available for pick up after the videos were posted each month.

As a result to this virtual program, the same number of members paid their dues and one member mentioned that she wasn’t going to pay her homemaker dues because of the pandemic, but decided to after seeing the programs the Homemakers were offering in place of the face to face meetings.
