Youth who participate in extracurricular activities are more likely to become productive citizens in their community. The Floyd County Extension Service, through the 4-H program planned and implemented various leadership activities for teens. The Floyd County 4-H Teen Council holds monthly meetings including leadership activities and officer proceedings. The 4-H teen Council members are provided the opportunity for leadership through team bonding, communication exercises and community service projects which involves teamwork. Floyd County teens participated in the Issues Conference, Teen Summit, Teen Conference, District Meetings and much more. Teen Council members also have the opportunity to serve has Camp Counselor for both our overnight camp and day camps, serve as volunteers for our Reality Store, After school programs and school enrichment programs.  The Floyd County 4-H Program also had 3 members serve on the State Teen Council and 1 on the Kentucky 4-H Performing Arts Troupe. An end of year survey taken by 20 active teens, revealed that 100% of the teens fully understand the meaning of leadership; 100% say their confidence has increased as a leader; and 92% have improved their skills in communication 4-H provides the opportunity for youth to get together in a non-threatening environment, free of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. The skills learned through the 4-H teen program allow the youth to become contributing members of society. The long-term relationships with volunteers, agents, and specialists, is priceless. The value of these experiences is greater than the sum of the parts.
