                                          Seniors Go Virtual

The senior population is at risk for chronic diseases that can be delayed or prevented by proper nutrition and staying physically active. In addition, the Center for Disease Control reports that the risk of getting seriously ill from Covid-19 increases as we get older. In fact, eight out of ten Covid-19 related deaths have been among adults aged 65 and older. With the pandemic closing most Senior Adult Activity Centers, SNAP-Ed providing nutrition and exercise classes for this demographic came to a halt.

In a partnership with the Anderson County Senior Center, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Education Assistant in Anderson County was able to virtually connect with some of the centers members by providing videos that were viewed on Facebook. “Tuesday Tips” provided much of the same information that would be provided In a SNAP Education class. The “Workout Wednesday” videos were easy to follow exercises that were appropriate for many fitness levels and also contained many strength training exercises. These videos promote the thirty minutes of daily exercise that is suggested for adults.

With the use of social media, we were able to continue providing information to promote a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthy lifestyle will decrease chronic illness. Virtual learning will help to keep our seniors safe by maintaining social distance.
