Development of beef leadership

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Agriculture and Extension Leadership Development

Plan of Work: Leadership Enhancement and Community Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Bath County Extension office has worked closely with local beef producers to encourage participation in university and state programs that provide leadership opportunities.  Bath County extension recruited strong leaders in the beef production field to participate in the two night conference held in July  to provide insight and direction for the UK beef specialists as they develop programs for the state.  These leaders were active participants in the program and provided an eastern Kentucky perspective to the conversation.  This agent was contacted by a state cattlemen's member to encourage one of our strong producers and leaders to pursue a state board position.  This producer is now serving as a regional vice president representing the interests from our region.  Bath County has another strong young leader serving in various roles including district board member, ag development council member, and local Farm Bureau President who is now running for a state position with Farm Bureau. This local leader will bring a wealth of knowledge and new ideas to this position and will represent our local community exceptionally well.  Extension has worked with other, successful producers as well, providing support and a foundation by providing opportunities to serve in leadership roles throughout the extension organization and encouraging these leaders to share their knowledge and visions with other regions of the state by serving in leadership roles outside of Bath County.  Extension will continue to provide a foundation for leadership throughout the county.
