Pike 4-H Youth Learn Skills during the Pandemic

Members of the Pike County Extension Council identified the acquisition of skills as one of the needs for the citizens of Pike County.   In response to the pandemic, our office made kits that utilized the Kentucky 4-H Curriculum in Communication and Fine Arts as well as Agriculture Booklets in its’ formation.  4-H youth in Pike County learned new skills through the production of 4-H Kids Kits.  In all 3,345 kits were utilized by youth during the stay at home time during March, April and May.

From paintings to picture frames, the youth were challenged to follow directions to make art and woodworking projects.   During the pandemic, we have emptied our shelves in making projects for these hands-on activities.  Who would thought of using donated golf balls or making a trinket box from clay pigeons?

Families picked up the kits from the Pike County Extension Office.  We delivered kits to schools that were a long distance to drive in this large geographic county.  Parents were grateful for the projects that not only filled time but help their children build practical living skills.  Parents commented on our Pike County 4-H Facebook page.  Anita Charles said, “Thank you so much for this!  My son and I loved working on it together.  His (wooden) pig now has a permanent place in our kitchen.”   Megan O’Neil said, “We love these crafts!  (This) really helps us on rainy quarantined days.”  Beverly Hampton said, “This is Sophie’s (project), just remodeled her room and painted hers to match her new room.”  Katie Dingess stated, “My kids loved their kits but wanted to do their own design.   Kaden’s’ is a beautiful day Bailee’s is a night sky.”  And finally Christa Hess Adams said, “Got there in time to get a kit for both of my boys!   They are so excited!  Thanks for doing this during this time.”

Pike County 4-H is building the work force by teaching skills to our youth.  4-H is making the best, better!
