Major Program: LEAP

Plan of Work: SNAP

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools and preschools to close their doors for a long period of time compelling teachers to find alternatives to instruction techniques. The LEAP for Health curriculum stood out as a program that could be modified using video to give young children an opportunity to learn about nutritious foods, healthy eating habits and being physically active.   The Kenton County Family and Consumer Sciences agent addressed Family Resource Center Coordinators during an advisory council meeting to gauge the interest in participating.   Ninth District School in Covington volunteered to pilot the series of videos and activities throughout the year as each video is produced. The FCS agent, along with the program assistant, videotaped a reading of the first selected book “Count on Pablo” and making the salsa recipe. Children can follow along with their own copy of the book or without. Additionally families will learn to make salsa together. As parents and teachers agree to participate in the program the video link and the book is shared along with the newsletters and other activities designed to foster literacy, healthy eating and activity.  As the school year goes forward more video books will be added. The objective is to enhance the learning experience for the children, help parents engage in the teaching process with the children and encourage families to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables.
