Outcome: Initial Outcome

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes and stresses for the people of Kentucky and the nation. Among the challenges was the need to stay home, to social distance and wear a face covering when going out and with it, the need to find ways to stay informed, healthy and connected socially to others. To address these needs, the Letcher County Family & Consumer Sciences Agent began offering weekly Grab and Go Bags. These bags covered timely topics such as beginning gardening, mental health, sun safety, physical activity, aging gracefully, nutrition, as well as more diverse subjects relevant to the pandemic, such as food preservation and budgetary concerns. More than 500 bags have been given out during this pandemic.  

Evaluation results of the weekly Grab and Go Bags:

93% are frequent users of the Extension Office

96% have learned new tips/skills

92% are making healthier lifestyle choices

79% are engaging in more quality time as a family

83%are putting into practice some stress management tips suggested in the grab bags

Comments made: “I love the recipes”. “Keeps me occupied and focused, not being depressed”, “Tools, supplies, recipes, knowledge”, “Keeps us connected while apart”, “Resources that I wouldn’t have without these bags”, “It has been a positive thing to look forward to each week. Thank you!”, Stress tips have been very helpful”. Increase mood, purpose, feeling of creating”, Look forward to going to get, learning, and making”, “Money management, occupy time stress relief” and “Recipes, money management, useful tools”.
