Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In recent years, Harlan County has faced numerous natural disasters, such as flooding, snow storms and wildfires.  These events also led to power and water outages and residents being evacuated from home or not being able to access their home.  Education about preparedness is imperative.

With September being  National Preparedness Month, the Harlan County Extension Service teamed up with the Letcher County and Wise County Extension Offices to host six Disaster Preparedness informational workshops.  During the workshops, participants learned of ways to prepare for disasters that may arise.   The tips included making a plan, storage of extra water and food and making sure all family and household members know where all items are located, weather preparedness, fire safety, first aid and emergency communications.

Also, disaster preparedness informational tips were provided each Wednesday evening via the office social media page.

Information was used to have citizens aware and to have them plan for disasters they may face.  Feedback, from those that attended the workshops, stated that one family had reviewed their fire escape plan and another started the family conversation about how to prepare for emergencies.
