Nutrition in the Virtual World due to COVID-19

According to World Health Organization over 33 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed. COVID-19 has took a significant toll on people all across the world. It also took a toll on in-person teaching and other face-to-face learning. Although SNAP-Ed nutrition couldn’t provide that in-person interaction, nutrition classes offered something totally new and different to help those in need. Rowan County SNAP-Ed Program Assistant started a Virtual Healthy Choices class for clients through a private group on Facebook.

The Healthy Choices curriculum promotes lessons such as My Plate, Knowing your body’s limits, making healthier choices, reading labels, meal planning, budgeting, food safety, and breakfast made easy. These classes help by providing necessary nutrition and physical activity related material to help better themselves. Each class, clients would learn an important nutrition lesson that would help benefit them health-wise and at the end of each class they would get a healthy recipe via email that helps show that healthy food can-not only be good but nutritious as well while using healthy ingredients.

Clients have gave wonderful feedback of how great the class is. They have said they really enjoy every class and glad they have the online platform, so they can watch or replay at their convenience. One personal message stated “Your class has really been beneficial and informing – I can’t wait until next class every Tuesday. I also try the recipes every weekend and every one of them have tasted WONDERFUL. Who knew healthy food could be so good."
