Nutrition Education for Substance Abuse Recovery during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Author: Benita Wade

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Christian County SNAP-Ed assistant was concerned about clients in a residential recovery center and their continuation of the curriculum Healthy Choices for Every Body during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consistency is important for a good outcome during recovery. To help prepare clients for a healthy life, the assistant provided zoom classes to deliver the Healthy Choices program. The assistant wanted to maintain the programming and keep things as normal as possible during the pandemic and provide a familiar face in a time of such uncertainty.

14 to 41 clients were reached through each of the classes and were provided with handouts, recipes and other tools to reinforce what they learned. 31 clients graduated from the program during the pandemic. 94% of those showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators such as drinking regular sodas less often and eating vegetables more often. Also, 90% of participants showed improvement in one or more food safety practices with 68% using a meat thermometer more often and 55% thawing food at room temperature less often.
