Many negative aspects are associated with the Covid-10 pandemic, which can easily trigger more stress, panic and anxiety for many families and individuals. However, this brings an even greater opportunity for communities to come together and help one another during challenging times. The 4-H Agent, along with several other community partners, had to think outside of the box to offer at-home educational experiences that foster engagement and new learning opportunities for youth. With children spending more time at home during the pandemic, the Clay County 4-H program implemented take-home cooking kits.
According to Kentucky by the Numbers, 38% of individuals in Clay County struggle with obesity, which is one of the many risks associated with Covid-19. The main objectives for the cooking kits were to provide youth with new learning experiences, become familiar with cooking skills, learn basic hygiene practices in the kitchen, and explore MyPlate. Fourteen youth participated and received six educational hours. Each kit contained a recipe, basic ingredients, nutritional facts and a MyPlate lesson. Kits focused on the five food groups and activities related to the recipe.
Evaluation Results:
100% reported cooking a new recipe for the first time.
85% reported feeling confident in preparing the recipe for their family.
100% reported always washing fruits & vegetables before preparing.
Participants’ responses when asked, “What new skill did you gain?”
“I learned to make something new.”
“I learned how to substitute an ingredient.”
“I learned how to make biscuit mix from scratch.”
“I learned how to use the oven.”
“I learned how to chop an onion.”
