Wally Cat at the Market

The Nutrition Education Program SNAP-Ed Assistant adventures outdoors. Following the COVID-19 guidelines, the Farmer’s Market was a great location for the Assistant and Wally Cat. Together the duo shared fun motivating activities and healthy eating practices along with fresh displays of whole fruits and vegetables. The displays were used as an identifying game for the youth and some adults. The nutritional message was shared through  116 copies of recipe cards, 155 copies of Chop Chop magazines, 40 copies of Healthy at Home Newsletters, 50 copies of Kid’s Club Newsletters, 30 copies of Healthy and Easy Recipes for Children Cookbooks, 25 copies of Cook with Pork and Tuna Cookbooks and  10 copies of Seasoned Magazines.  Seventeen local youth and their families participated in the four week Wally Cat Walkabout scavenger hunt. Upon completion, the youth received a new market bag, a youth size comic apron with cape and a $5 certificate to buy fresh produce in the market.  

The seventeen families participating in the Walkabout walked at least 30 minutes to locate the markers in the downtown businesses windows. Fifty-one persons walking thirty minutes. There was five (hunts) makes for a total of 1,530 minutes and 102,000 steps. Staying physically active and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, prepared safely, using healthy recipes at home with the family was the message that the Assistant and Wally Cat presented to the 167 guest that visited their table.
