Backpack to School

Author: Mary Elaine Burton

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In these uncertain times with families stressing over losing jobs or huge cutbacks and school starting back, the Senior SNAP-Ed Assistant, along with the 4-H and Ag Assistants pulled together their incentives and purchased and donated items to create 62 Back-to-School Backpack for a giveaway program.

We advertised on social media the dates and times that giveaway would be held. We had over 2000 likes and 80 shares on our post. All 62 bags were given out in record time and gone within 30 minutes of the first day.

The families and children were all excited to receive all the cool back-to-school supplies inside the backpack. One parent said that she and her child loved to visit the Farmers Market and participate in 4-H activities. She also asked for information on new recipes and would like to start a Nutrition Education Parent class when available.
