In March of 2020 people’s everyday lives took a lifestyle hit with coronavirus COVID 19. A life-threatening virus that made its way to the US. People were advised to stay at home to help slow the spread of the COVID-19. University of Kentucky required offices to stop any live programming. As a result, the Magoffin County Extension Office had to close the doors to the general public. With the use of the Magoffin County Brown Bag Projects, Zoom meeting, Team meetings and virtual programming the Magoffin County Extension Service was able to still show a vital presence within the County.
In support of the new normal, the Magoffin County Supplemental Nutrition Education Program Assistant partnered with the 4H Agent and Family and consumer Science Educators to implement new ways to reach the residents of Magoffin County. This office implemented the Brown Bag County Project. These brown bags where made bi-weekly for children as well a adults activities included activities like make you own Stress ball, Energy Bites, How to Sew a Button, Make a Living Necklace, making a Sugar Scrub, Exercise Bands, etc. Each bag contained things needed to complete the activity.
As a result, Kids and Adults were excited to have these activities to do with their kids while they where stuck at home. Some of the comments the Magoffin County Extension Service received were: “this is a great program.” “We are so happy to have help planning the longs days with our kids at home. “One mom even showcased a live Facebook Video of her daughter doing the activity from her Brown Bag. This led the Magoffin County Extension Service to stay connected to the regular clients as well as helped to connect with new people.
