4-H Youth Expo Provides Project Work Evaluation During Pandemic

Plan of Work: Developing Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Developing an opportunity for youth to showcase their project work during the summer of 2020 provided a challenge during a global pandemic. Opportunities for youth to explore project work within the 4-H State Fair project catalog were limited to just what the 4-H youth and parent were able and willing to attempt. In response, Woodford County 4-H was able to provide a large quantity of 4-H project kits to the general public as a means to explore these areas of interest. In order to evaluate the project work, the Woodford County 4-H Council, in partnership with the 4-H Agent, offered the 2020 4-H Youth Expo. 4-H youth were invited to submit their project work where it was evaluated by judges and awarded a blue, red or white ribbon based on the quality of the project. Given all of the changes to the programming offered and the uncertainty of the times, participation levels were uncertain. In response, 10 4-H youth submitted a combined 84 projects, averaging 8.4 projects per youth. These projects were split across 58 different classes in approximately 10 divisions. Providing this opportunity allowed youth to continue their project work experience during a time when little else was happening and hopefully providing a bridge year to when things go back to normal with 4-H programming in the county and state.
